Weekly Reflection 5

This week in Tech, we got the opportunity to attend two virtual Focused Ed PD day sessions. I decided to join Lisa Reads session about The Digital Classroom, and Mike Silvertons about Student Cybersecurity Awareness.

Lisa showed us how to navigate The Digital Classroom website which contains 17 online content resources that are available to all schools! I really loved her enthusiasm and eagerness to present these resources to us. One of the resources that really stood out to me was 4 Canoes. 4 Canoes is a platform which contains several authentic Indigenous resources. The people who created 4 Canoes spent months in Indigenous communities spending time with elders and taking photos which is why it is so authentic. I really liked this part because as a future teacher, it is so important to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and resources into the classroom, so knowing these resources are completely authentic is very reassuring.

Mike showed us some classroom ready lessons to support students in applying cybersecurity skills across their digital lives, whether at school, home, or in other settings. I never realized how important cybersecurity awareness was until I joined Mikes session. The resource covers such a wide variety of topics like building strong passwords, cyberbullying, social media influence and more.

I decided to take a look at one of the student hand outs under the category, “Making Sense of Social Media” age 8-11. I think this handout is great, and can also be used to check if students are using social media in a safe and proper way.
